Week 2

Favourite slide of the week

This week we covered early photography and daguerreotype, and how photographers were hybrids of scientist, inventor and artist. Most images from this lesson were mainly trying to grasp the new found invention/medium, hence, the photographs were all views from outside the window, scenic views, street views, views from on top of the roof(aerial view) etc. Not yet to the point of composing it but significant historical documentation photography from people like Maxine du Camp, Narayan Dajee, Jules Itier, from different parts of the world. In this lesson we took a closer look at Asia, and we know that the first photograph taken was in 1841(or 43) in Singapore.

Gilles composed this image which i find it really interesting that he painstakingly put these photographs taken by June Itier together, estimating the locations as accurately as he could and made it a 360 degree view collage of Canton. I mean, it's a work of art ON a work of art and it's amazing to see how the present overlaps the past in this slide.
